Welcome
The Steering Committee for 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC/URSI National Radio Science Meeting cordially invites you to join us in Spokane, Washington for what we believe will be both a productive and pleasurable event. The technical program will cover a vast array of electromagnetic topics, including the latest breakthroughs in antenna design, wireless communications, exotic materials, biomedical applications and numerical methods, to name just a few. Please see the Call for Papers for more specific information. The technical program will be augmented by a series of workshops and short courses that are designed to teach and inform attendees about the latest advances in electromagnetic science, engineering, and applications. To round off the program, a comprehensive social and spouses’ program will be provided that will highlight the unique venues and attractions of the City of Spokane and the surrounding beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
It is probably safe to say that Spokane is not a household name for most of our guests; such guests are probably wondering “Why Spokane?” The answer is simple: It offers a distinctive locale unlike anything we have offered for past symposia. To begin with, the conference hotel is truly a one-of-the-kind historic hotel of the utmost elegance. Constructed in 1914 and renovated in 1998 using $44M in funds, the Davenport Hotel retains all its original charm while providing all the modern amenities of a five star rated hotel. Each room is luxurious and the hotel’s open spaces are expansive yet charming. Each meeting room is designed after a European style of England, France, Spain or Russia, resulting in some exceptionally exotic spaces. On an adjacent corner is the Davenport Tower, which was built in 2008. Unlike its historic counterpart, the Tower is decorated in an African theme. Hence, both the Hotel and Tower are highly unique relative to the various hotel chains that we have commonly used in the past.
The technical program will be held in the Spokane Convention Center, which is about six city blocks (a pleasant 15 minute walk) away from the Hotel and Tower. (Free transportation between sites will be made available morning through night for those who wish to avoid walking.) The Center is sufficiently spacious to accommodate oral sessions, poster sessions, exhibits and breaks. The Center has also undergone a recent renovation, making it an aesthetically comfortable and modern meeting space. It is located next to the pristine Spokane River and the 100 acre Riverfront Park, within walking distance to fine shopping, theaters (including a 3D IMAX) and restaurants of various ethnic varieties and styles. Be sure to visit with colleagues and friends by sitting on benches and chairs overlooking the river during a session break.
If the weather is typical, you will experience clear, smog-free blue skies, low humidity and comfortable temperatures. It is our hope that you will spend as much time outdoors as you do indoors by walking or biking along the river, playing in the park or sipping wine on a high bluff over-looking the Spokane Valley. If you arrive by July 2, please take the special opportunity to enjoy the all day river rafting experience on July 3. You can bring the family and treat them to the Silverwood Amusement and Water Park, which is about an hour away in Idaho. Or, if you rent a car, drive through the pristine countryside of Washington, Idaho or Oregon and take in the breathtaking trees, lakes, rivers, mountains and even volcanoes. Finally, a dinner boat cruise on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho will allow you to relax at the end of our event-full week.
We will open the conference on Sunday, July 3rd with a reception at the Davenport Hotel. On Monday, July 4th, we will host a free salmon barbeque next to the Spokane River on the grounds of the Convention Center. Given that this a national holiday for the United States, we will have a unique view of the July 4th fireworks that will be launched on the other side of the river. In the nearby Riverfront Park will be hundreds of booths serving all sorts of foods or selling interesting wares. A walking bridge between the Center and the Park is nearby for those who wish to join in the celebrations of the Park.
We hope that you will visit us during the week of July 3-8, 2011 and experience why Spokane is billed as the city that is “Near nature, near perfect.” We look forward to seeing you in Spokane in what we think will be a unique event that is both professionally and personally rewarding.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Young
Steering Committee, Chair
